In the 1990s, Señora Luz Marina arrived in the United States with her husband and five children, carrying with her the vibrant culinary traditions of Oaxaca, Mexico—and a dream to build a better future.

She began humbly, selling tamales, gorditas, arroz con leche, and champurrado on the bustling streets of Midtown Manhattan. Her authentic flavors and unmistakable sazón quickly earned her a devoted following. Locals and tourists alike came for the food but stayed for her warmth, kindness, and passion—and soon her name spread far beyond the neighborhood.

In 2010, The Villager featured her story as one of New York City’s most beloved street vendors. That same year, the blog Kikaeats.com affectionately introduced her to readers as “The Mango Lady.” By 2013, her culinary journey was highlighted in the international book New York Street Food by Tom Vandenberghe, Jacqueline Goossens & Luk Thys, placing her among the city’s most iconic food figures.

Yet throughout all the recognition, Señora Luz Marina held onto one dream—to have a food truck of her own. In 2023, she found a classic 1985 Chevrolet truck and began transforming it into her dream kitchen on wheels. Nearly two years later, after careful restoration and the long process of earning city permits, her vision finally became a reality.

On September 1, 2025, Chileajo Food Truck opened its window for the first time—sharing over 25 years of experience and the authentic taste of Mexico with New York City.

The name “Chileajo” honors a traditional Oaxacan dish made with slow-cooked meat in a rich, flavorful sauce of toasted dried chiles, garlic, and spices like cumin, clove, and oregano. It represents everything Señora Marina stands for: deep roots, bold flavor, and the comforting taste of home.
